Apply for a maternity exemption
If you are a midwife, GP or healthcare professional registered to use this online service, you can apply for maternity exemption certificates on behalf of expectant or new mothers.
A maternity exemption certificate entitles the mother to free prescriptions:
- while pregnant
- for 12 months after the birth of the child
Before you start
You'll need the mother's:
- date of birth
- NHS number
- due or birth date of their child
- email or postal address
Problems signing in
You’ll need to register to use this service before you can sign in. You can register online.
If you have already registered but cannot sign in it may be because your email no longer meets the secure email standard. You can check this with your IT department.
If you cannot use the digital service you can still issue maternity exemption certificates by submitting an FW8 application form.
